Why Is My Toronto Store’s Organic Traffic Down When Its Rankings Look Fine?

October 12, 2026 · 4 min read · Daniel

Average position can look fine while clicks fall. Google’s debugging guide, updated in December 2025, cautions against putting too much weight on rank. Search engine optimization (SEO) for Scarborough and Toronto businesses can include local SEO alongside organic search work.

Impressions, the number of times a page appears in results, can hold steady while weak titles or richer rival listings cost you clicks. Northbound Growth Advisory’s SEO & AI Search Visibility service pairs technical work and content with reporting tied to leads and revenue.

Average Position Can Hide the Queries That Moved

Averaged across a whole site, position blends winners and losers into one number.

A move from position 2 to 4 can cost noticeable traffic with little change in impressions. The debugging guide calls shifts like that constant and says some recover without action. It advises leaving pages that already perform well alone.

In the Performance report, sort the Pages table by click difference to find the biggest losers. Reading each page’s queries one at a time shows which ones moved. A spreadsheet that puts those pages next to their revenue shows what the loss costs. Our post on the 7 numbers every CEO should see on a marketing report covers which figures to ask for

Group queries by type, such as product searches and category searches, and treat the site-wide average as a summary. The guide describes rankings as dynamic, because new content appears and existing pages change constantly. Note the date each page’s clicks began to fall, then ask your developer what shipped that week.

Steady Impressions Point at the Listing Itself

When impressions hold, and clicks fall, the search listing deserves a hard look.

The guide offers two explanations. Your page title and description may not tell people clearly what the page offers. Other sites may also show more appealing rich results, listings that carry extra detail beyond a title and a link.

For your biggest losing queries, pull up the results and look at the listings ranked near yours. Competitors may show prices or ratings that yours lacks. Read your own title and description the way a buyer would.

Skip title rewrites on pages where impressions fell, because the cause lies elsewhere. Google’s AI features guide, updated in December 2025, also advises keeping your product and business information up to date.

Report Organic Search in Revenue Terms

Position data needs revenue beside it before anyone can judge a traffic drop.

Our reports use business terms such as leads and revenue, and they include revenue and ROI, return on investment, wherever those can be measured. For an Ecommerce & DTC brand with Scarborough and Toronto buyers, that means organic revenue by product category beside the position data.

  1. Revenue by product category shows which parts of the catalog lost sales.
  2. Orders from organic landing pages, the pages visitors enter from search, show whether the drop reached your revenue.
  3. Impressions on buying searches reveal whether demand or visibility moved.
  4. Click-through rate, the share of impressions that become clicks, tells you whether titles and descriptions work.

Our Analytics & Reporting service builds dashboards that show spend, leads, cost per lead, and revenue by channel. Ask whoever reports your organic results to show revenue from organic landing pages for the weeks the drop began. Read each line against the same month a year earlier, because seasonality repeats.

Report these four lines every month in the same format, so a trend is easy to read. Daniel Climans, our Founder and Principal, sets objectives and success metrics before any engagement starts. We then report against those key performance indicators (KPIs) and put more behind what performs.

Someone senior should own the diagnosis. Clients work directly with Daniel on strategy, priorities, and quality control, and specialist teams handle the execution.

AI Features Sit Inside Your Search Console Totals

AI Overviews, Google’s AI-written topic summaries, and AI Mode, its AI search for in-depth questions, share your Search Console totals with classic results.

According to the AI features guide, sites shown in those features count inside the Web search type of your Performance report. Setting the search type to Web shows those appearances. In June 2026, the Google Search Central Blog announced reports dedicated to AI impressions, split by page, country, device, and date.

Those reports measure impressions, so check them against orders and time on site from Google Analytics, Google’s tool for tracking visits and conversions. The AI features guide reports higher-quality clicks from results that carry AI Overviews, meaning visitors are more likely to spend time on the site. Judge an AI feature on orders and engagement, and treat click counts as one input.

Search a few of your lost queries and see whether an AI Overview appears. Google shows them only when its systems judge them additive, so they often don’t trigger.

The guide says you need no special markup or AI text files to appear in these features. Skip any vendor pitch that sells one.

Demand Can Fall While Your Position Holds

A fall in searches shows up as fewer impressions even when your rank doesn’t change.

Google Trends, Google’s tool for tracking search interest over time, shows whether a query fell for everyone or only for your store. Trends charts also show seasonal swings, so check the same query a year earlier. A major event can change what people search for and how they use their devices.

Seasonality and shifting interest sit outside your control, and the debugging guide lists both among the external influences on traffic. A page rewrite won’t bring missing searches back. Check the queries that still drive orders and make sure those pages are indexed, meaning stored by Google, and load properly.
